In March 2026, we started a new rolling research programme with people that work on government services. We hold sessions every few weeks throughout the year.

Introducing our ‘Always on’ research with users in services

We’d like to learn more about how and why people use the Design System to build government services, and do this on an ongoing basis.

The goal is to stay in touch with the needs of our users and continuously improve our work.

Who can take part

We want to speak with anyone who uses the GOV.UK Design System. You can take part if you use the Design System (or elements of it) and work for:

  • a GOV.UK service
  • a cross-government service, such as within a department, government organisation or local council

You can take part no matter how often you use the Design System or what your job title is. It does not matter how experienced or senior you are. We’d particularly like to hear from people who are new to the Design System.

Session format

We hold regular sessions on Microsoft Teams or, occasionally, in-person at your workplace. We’ll schedule sessions during working hours, for up to 45 minutes. The actual length of each session will depend on what you have to say.

Sessions will involve us talking about how and why you use the Design System (or elements of it) in your service and how well these meet your needs. We’ll ask you questions about your service and your experience to understand your perspective.

There are no right or wrong answers. We’re only interested in your experiences and how you think and feel about things.

You can also sign up by contacting us by email or cross-government Slack with the subject line “Design System research sessions”. Be sure to also tell us:

  • your name
  • your job role
  • the service you work for
  • your preferred contact email

Presenting our findings

We share findings from our research with the Design System community in our regular catch-up calls. Recent topics we have covered have included:

  • the benefits of using the GOV.UK Design System
  • how you navigate and use the GOV.UK Design System, alongside other resources
  • improving communications between the GOV.UK Design System and users
